Coastal living is hard work, but the rewards are plenty. Our mission is to share our way of life with those who serve our nation and our communities. We're military families—we've been there, stretched thin, missing birthdays, missing dinner; and we see you. We are here for our military heroes, our cops and fire fighters, our first responders, educators, and caregivers. You're the ones who show up because others can't. We are all in this together—now let's get out on the water!

— Kyle Rockefeller, Founder

Why We Exist

Not About the Biggest Fish

Bayou Family Fishing isn't about catching the biggest fish. It's about making sure nobody wastes their one good day off.

South Louisiana's waters are huge — tides, weather, spots, all changing every hour. If you're working long shifts, raising kids, or just trying to keep life together, there's no time to study charts or chase rumors. That's where we come in.

We're pooling everything we've got — our tips, our spots, our stories — into one easy place. A member portal where you log in, see where folks are headed, share what you're seeing, maybe even hop on someone else's boat. Part of it? Safe boating: file a quick plan — where you're going, when you'll be back — so we're all looking out for each other.

We're not pros. We're just people who love the water, who want to give families — especially those who serve — a real shot at joy. Less stress, more time together, more fish and safer days out there.

We just bought land

INNISFREE is our newly acquired piece of Louisiana marshland — and we need your hands to help build it into a community hub for fishing, camping, and cultural preservation.

How You Can Help

Volunteer Opportunities

Maintenance/Construction

Something's always broken out here — boats, docks, camp buildings. If you can swing a hammer or turn a wrench, we need you.

Physical · Weekends

Licensed Captains

Licensed captain? We're building a network of guides willing to take our members out on short-notice trips. Good folks, good fishing, fair rates.

Certified Required

Fishing/Boating Instructors

Teach the basics — casting, knots, catch-and-release — then help us turn BFF into a competitive team on the water.

Teaching · Flexible

Innisfree

We're building a camp four miles out in the marsh, starting from nothing. Ask about becoming a plank owner.

Physical · Marshland

Media & Storytelling

Photograph events, shoot video, write up the stories. Somebody's got to tell this right.

Creative · Remote OK

Our Fleet

The Boats

Boats are magic—but they don't mean much if they're sitting dry. We're not building a collection—we're building a crew.

If you've got one, bring it. If you're saving for one, start here. If you're already out there, come share.

Log in, drop your plan: 'I'm heading to the cut at eight, back by two.' Someone sees it, says 'I'm free—want company?' Or 'Need a hand with the trailer?' We share fuel, gear, know-how—everything—so nobody's alone.

And we don't stop at 'good enough.' New folks learn the basics: throttle, tides, radio. Then we climb—safety first, drills, charts—until you're running trips like you've done it forever. Some go licensed. Some just get better. Either way, every seat's open.

Why? So families—especially the ones who serve—get real time on the water. No charts, no stress. Just sun, laughs, a kid's first bite. We file plans, check in, watch each other's backs... so you go home lighter.

This fleet isn't about us. It's about them. And if we all pitch in? We get boats that last, captains who grow, and days that matter.

Uncle John's Campagna Skiff

Uncle John's Campagna Skiff

Classic Fiberglass Skiff · Shallow-Draft · Family Vessel

A true bayou classic. Uncle John's Campagna Skiff is a shallow-draft family vessel built for the tight canals and open marsh alike. She's perfect for beginner fishing days and youth outings — the kind of boat that builds memories and first catches.

The Ms. Carol

The Ms. Carol

Louisiana Shrimp Trawler · Working Heritage Vessel

The Ms. Carol is a traditional Louisiana shrimp trawler and one of our most storied boats. She's a living connection to the commercial fishing heritage that defines this coast. We use her for special cultural outings and to remind members where bayou tradition comes from.

The Last Chance

The Last Chance

Homemade Aluminum Skiff — work boat.

We've been wanting a boat like this for a long time, and now there will be no more crab traps in the Check Twice. She's a head turner — plenty of these boats in Acadiana, but mine is unique and special in Plaquemines.

The Check Twice

The Check Twice

VIP Baystealth — Suzuki — Minn Kota

I'm not sure what's easier on the eyes, this boat or my 2001 Jeep Wrangler. When having a fishing camp was still just a dream, the second dream was picturing this boat sitting in its slip, ready to go.

Bait By You Hook it or Cook it

Bait By You — Hook it or Cook it

Louisiana Trawler · Deep Bayou Roots

The name says everything about who we are. "Bait By You — Hook it or Cook it" is a working Louisiana trawler with deep bayou character and community roots. She represents the spirit of self-reliance and celebration that makes fishing culture here unlike anywhere else in the world. Capt. Sam Ronquille invites you to the tackle box where you can get live shrimp and visit him and his dog Bayou.

🎓 Confidence Course & Licensing Note

In Louisiana, boat operators born after January 1, 1984 are required to complete an LDWF-approved boater education course to operate a motorboat over 10 HP or any personal watercraft. Free online courses are available at BoatUS.org and Boat-ED.com. See the LDWF boater education page for full details. If you are new to boating, we provide hands-on training to members who complete certification.

Our Land

Welcome to INNISFREE

A place that brings you peace just knowing it exists.

Innisfree is our piece of Louisiana, named by Big Papa after a poem by W.B Yeats (link). The journey is just the beginning. Become a plank owner by joining us early as we repair existing structures and break ground on our future multifamily campsite. This will be the home of Bayou Charity, a hub for fishing, camping, and cultural preservation.

The Vision

Building Up, Together

It begins with a boat ride and sightseeing trip, but then you stand on the back pier whose steps are washed away and look out on the open, free marshland toward the ponds beyond, you'll feel it stuck between two worlds on the edge of something special.

1

Dock Repair and Debris Clearing

  • Repair and extend usable dock space, and clear debris in the water.
  • Install fish cleaning station.
  • Innisfree is ready to host day trips for dock fishing and inspiration.
2

Enclose Quonset Hut

  • Replace floor and erect walls on the hut.
  • Wire for generator power and future solar power.
  • Install air conditioning.
  • Innisfree is now an overnight experience.
3

Extend Pier to Our Marshland

  • Erect stairs to the marshland.
  • Build elevated temporary catwalks on the footprint of our future camp community and to the redfish pond beyond.
  • Begin bulkhead construction at the waterfront.
4

Permanent Piers and Foundations

  • Begin construction of permanent elevated walkways to multiple open decks, which will be foundations for future camps.
  • Complete bulkhead construction.
  • Begin dredging to backfill the bulkhead.
5

Build Camps

  • Complete all elevated walkways and foundations for camps and central deck, and the observation tower.
  • Build camps and wire for generators.
  • Host plank owner grand opening of the camps at Innisfree.

Built on Passion,
Rooted in Culture

I love being around boats and airplanes! I spent a little time in uniform with the Louisiana Air National Guard, but it was over the many years as a contractor at Belle Chasse Naval Air Station where I feel like I really served.

I finally became a good mechanic and did some work I was really proud of. However, the most important work was making friends and building relationships.
